URGENT: MVA Issues REAL ID License Recall

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has initiated a recall of thousands of driver’s licenses marked as REAL ID-compliant due to individuals failing to submit the necessary documents to qualify for a REAL ID. It’s crucial to be aware that any recalled license is no longer considered valid and may be confiscated by law enforcement during traffic stops. If you suspect that your license is subject to recall, take immediate action by visiting an MVA office with the required REAL ID documents.

To determine if your license is subject to recall, consult the MVA’s REAL ID lookup.

The Maryland ID Card Advantage

If you reside in Maryland but do not possess a driver’s license, a Maryland ID card serves as your official photo identification for verifying your identity, age, or address.

This guide provides comprehensive information on how to apply for, renew, or replace your ID card, details on associated fees, instructions for updating personal information, and more.

The Maryland MVA introduced federally-compliant REAL ID cards as replacements for standard identification cards in 2011*. After October 1, 2021, the REAL ID is the sole credential permitting you to use your license for domestic travel and entry into federal and military facilities. For comprehensive insights into the REAL ID Act, consult the MVA’s detailed guide.

*Individuals immigrating to the U.S. without the requisite citizenship documents are eligible for a non-compliant ID card. The MVA provides eligibility criteria and application guidelines.
