Applying for a Dutch ID Card
If you’re a Dutch national residing in Amsterdam or have a registered postal address within the city, getting a Dutch ID card is a straightforward process. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to ensure you acquire your Dutch ID card efficiently.
Visiting a City Office
To initiate the application process, you must visit a City Office in person. Keep in mind that you need to schedule an appointment before your visit. This step is crucial to ensure a seamless experience.
Eligibility Criteria
Before applying for a Dutch ID card, there are some key eligibility conditions to consider:
Dutch Nationality
You must hold Dutch nationality to qualify for a Dutch ID card.
Amsterdam Residency
You must be registered as a resident in Amsterdam, or alternatively, have a postal address registered with the City.
Applying for Minors
If you’re applying for a Dutch ID card for a child under the age of 18, or a Dutch passport for a child, the process may differ slightly.
Lost or Stolen ID Card
In the unfortunate event that your ID card is lost or stolen, you can apply for a replacement at a City Office. To prevent identity fraud, you can submit an ‘attestation’ at the City Office, stating that your ID card was lost or stolen. Notably, you do not have to file a police report before applying for a new ID card.
However, if your ID card was stolen in a foreign country, you will need to file a report with the local police there.
Choosing Between Passport and Dutch ID Card
It’s essential to consider your travel needs when deciding between a Dutch ID card and a passport. While a Dutch ID card is more cost-effective, it is valid in fewer countries. You can check the list of countries that recognize a Dutch ID card on rijksoverheid.nl.
Required Documents
When you visit the City Office for your ID card application, ensure that you bring the following documents with you:
Passport Photo
You’ll need a passport photo that meets the official requirements. It is advisable to consult a professional photographer to ensure compliance.
Payment Method
Preferably, bring your debit card for payment. Alternatively, cash is accepted.
Previous Dutch Travel Documents
If applicable, bring all of your (expired) Dutch travel documents, including your passport and ID card.
Gaining Dutch Citizenship
If you have recently gained Dutch citizenship, bring your (expired) foreign travel documents and your residence documents from the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service).
Processing Time
After submitting your application, you can expect your Dutch ID card to be ready after five working days. You have the option to either collect the card in person (by appointment only) or have it delivered to your address.
Urgent Application and Temporary Documentation
In urgent situations, you can opt for an expedited application, which comes at an additional cost. The fees for an urgent application are €108.15, while a standard ID card application costs €58.30. It’s important to note that a Dutch ID card is valid for ten years.
Free ID Card with a Stadspas (City Pass)
If you have a low income and hold a Stadspas (City Pass) with a green dot, you may be eligible for a free ID card. However, keep in mind that you will still need to cover the expenses for passport photos and any additional charges for urgent applications. This benefit extends to both yourself and your children.
Collection or Delivery Options
During the application process, you will have the choice between collecting your ID card in person or having it delivered to your address. Once the selection is made, it cannot be changed, so consider your preference carefully.
Acquiring a Dutch ID card is a straightforward process as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and follow the necessary steps outlined in this guide. Ensure that you have all the required documents in order to streamline the application process, and soon, you’ll have your Dutch ID card in hand.
